EDGES of Gender

Training Course

10-16 March 2020 | Tirana, Albania

EDGES of Gender is a training course on the four gender dimensions through artistic photography. During 6 days of activities participants to learn about gender, sexuality, visual storytelling and expression. Artworks will be showcased in an exhibition.

The Training

EDGES Training will balance participative workshops and reflective learning on gender and photography during the days of activities for participants to have a personalized learning process where they can focus on what they find more relevant, being deepening their competences on inclusion, discrimination, gender diversity, sexuality and expression or on photography, visual storytelling, creative conceptualization and editing.

In the end of this process, each participant will have a better understanding of the four gender dimensions and how they can make an impact in their societies to improve current situation as well as collaborate in a digital photography exhibition sharing these diverse perspectives.

Following our EDGES learning principle: Everybody will learn, everybody will share.
Do you want to be part of the process?

The Objectives

The overall aim of EDGES is to build the capacities for youth work and training to:

  • develop a modern gender sensitive approach through the 4 gender dimensions,
  • support training through artistic expression, and
  • provide participants with different digital methods on how to visualize sensitive statements through artworks as forms and tools for dissemination and promotion.

Objectives are to:

  • Develop a basic understanding on gender equality and inequality, the overall terminology of the four gender dimensions and different forms of discrimination in these areas
  • Develop new perspectives on possibilities in active participation on gender and sexuality issues
  • Exchange personal experiences and best practices against any form of discrimination, inequality and conflicts
  • Develop a basic understanding on behavioural design to shift bias in the four gender dimensions
  • Have a better understanding on the power of artistic photography in the field of prevention and empowerment
  • Develop technical skills on photography as well as professional editing
  • Develop skills on visual storytelling on sensitive topics
  • Create a series of photography visualizing (im)balance in the four gender dimensions
  • Kickstart a “Digital Exhibition” as mean for sharing the artworks

Participant Profile

The profile of participants whom we are looking for includes:

  • young people, youth workers and educators
  • active in NGOs with youth from different social backgrounds and groups

with different levels of experience in working with:

  • photography and multimedia art,
  • gender-related topics, and
  • inclusion and diversity.

We aim to have a balance in participants coming with different levels of knowledge in these areas to the activities to create the possibility of future projects.
With this, we also aim to create a space in which participants can learn with and from each other.

We want to include participants’ working experience in the creation of the training and during the learning processes. On the one hand, we are interested in bringing people the first approach of the topic through art. On the other hand, we want to deepen the knowledge already existing and clarifying wrong assumptions. Additionally, we aim for a very gender-balanced group of participants with different social backgrounds, who are also familiar with discriminated groups as Roma and LGBT+.
