Embodied Change: Introduction to Embodied Learning

E-learning

2 December 2019 - 31 January 2020 | Latvia

Are you working with young people or in the field education? Looking for ideas and inspiration on how to bring in more movement, playfulness and impact into your educational work? Then this free online course is for you! Available continuously.

In this course, we will introduce you to the main elements and principles of embodied learning - a contemporary pedagogical theory of learning, which emphasizes the use of the body in educational practice. In the embodied learning process, one's body becomes a laboratory through which one learns – through movement, touch, drawing, journal writing, reflection and other activities.

Embodied learning is a powerful tool to develop young people's social and emotional skills, sense of initiative and entrepreneurial mindsets and also to build more peaceful, connected and responsible communities. Moreover, the education that connects us with our bodies, gives us power – the ability to trust ourselves, navigate through difficult situations and changes, to know how to learn and bring to life our learning.

The course has been prepared by an international team of trainers who will share their experiences and the best practices of delivering body awareness, learning and movement based on non-formal learning programs, for both young people and adults.

The learning content is structured in four modules:

  • Introducing participants to the concepts and principles of embodied learning.
  • Embodied learning methods that help to develop social and civic skills, entrepreneurship and initiative.
  • Practical exercises for the participants to improve their own facilitation skills and boost professional development.
  • Insight into the future, where instructors will explore the newest developments that combine embodied learning and technologies, for the sake of learning.

The course includes brief inputs from instructors, links to useful resources and methods that can be adapted for your work and most importantly, practical assignments. As you will discover, there are no right or wrong answers to the assignments - their purpose is to deepen an understanding of the topic, to encourage reflection and to develop and share ideas with other learners that will prove useful in your work.

During the course you will learn:

  • Foundations and benefits of embodied learning.
  • Creating a safe and supportive learning space.
  • Main principles of facilitating body-based and movement-based learning processes.
  • Practical methods for embodied educational work.
  • Tools and tips for improving your facilitation skills and presence.

You can also join the Facebook group of this project to receive personalized support from instructors and meet other people interested in embodied learning.

Upon successful completion of the course, you can request a Youthpass certificate, which is a recognition instrument for projects supported by Erasmus+ program. The Youthpass Certificate is recognized and respected internationally and can be helpful when looking for job opportunities, especially in youth, non-formal education and the third sector.

Embodied Change (Others)

Embodied Change is a strategic partnership project in the field of youth which is implemented with financial support from the Erasmus+ programme. Goal of this partnership is to elaborate innovative body and movement based learning principles and methods for boosting young people's participation and activism. Special focus is putted on developing competencies such as initiative and entrepreneurship, social and civic skills.

The project is implemented in cooperation of three creative associations - Room of Fulfilled Dreams from Latvia, Nomadways from France and Teatro Invisible from Italy. It includes several local and international events for young people, educators and youth work practitioners coming from these countries and also other parts of the world.

Main theme uniting all the activities and outputs of this project is body and movement based learning - its important concepts, principles, approaches and various methods, viewing the physical body as a domain of learning and transformation. Partners have developed an online course about body and movement based learning and an embodied learning toolkit that can be used in work with young people and also with adults - in order to empower them to use their voice and take action in matters that are important for them.

One of our objectives is to help professionals working in the field of youth, training and education to understand importance and role of body and movement in the learning process and elaborate guidelines and tools how to learn from the body and with the body. We hope to inspire educators to become more attentive to the needs of their own and their learners bodies and integrate body and movement based learning in their work with young people and also use it for their own professional development.

Reason to focus on body and movement based learning is that it allows us to practice what it is we want to become, individually and collectively. It can contribute toward a more transformative, powerful and effective social movement, while we can also benefit personally and organisationally through change and growth.
