Youth and Museums #MuseoJoven Seminar

E-learning

3-8 October 2020 | Spain

The seminar aims to create a meeting space for youth workers, young people, and museum professionals with the intention of reflecting upon their relationship and bringing them closer together.

Following the two previous editions of "Other Museums Generation: Youth at the Museums", the Spanish National Agency for Youth is organizing the seminar “Youth and Museums #MuseoJoven”. The goal of this new edition is to continue generating new strategies for dialogue and cooperation between museums and the youth field.

The seminar aims to create a meeting space for youth workers, young people, and museum professionals with the intention of reflecting upon their relationship and bringing them closer together.

The seminar will take place in two parts.

The first part will consist of two online open sessions with Seminar participants and other interested people; including those not selected for the residential seminar. During the sessions, we will share experiences in relation to the work of bringing young people and museums together, reflect upon the challenges and opportunities in this area, and collaboratively collect ideas and conclusions from the debates.

These open online sessions will happen through an online platform on Tuesday 22/9, 9h30 - 13h CEST and Tuesday 29/9, 15h-18h30 CEST.

The second part for the 35 selected participants will include an online session and an ONLINE Seminar.

In the online first session (Monday 21/9, 13h - 15h CEST), participants will present themselves and their background to the group as well as take ownership of the online open process in the open sessions.

During the second seminar (3-8 October 2020, ), the group will meet in-person to deepen the inquiry and analysis of the ideas and conclusions drawn from the past editions and the first part online sessions with the goal of collectively establishing guidelines and recommendations that advance the work of bringing museums and the youth population closer together.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Share experiences and analyze the challenges and opportunities in the collaboration between youth professionals, young people, and museums.
  • Collect experiencies and ideas.
  • Collaboratively design guidelines and recommendations to bring museums closer to the youth population.
  • Generate synergies between the participants.

METHODOLOGY:

The methodology of the seminar will be based on Non-Formal Education (NFE). One of the principles of NFE is horizontal and peer learning, which means that knowledge is built collectively and trainers function as facilitators for the group process rather than as content providers. In these contexts, diversity of backgrounds, experiences, perspectives contribute to the group´s learning and development. We will learn through dialogue while encouraging critical thinking. NFE is a highly participatory methodology.

PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS:

In the second part, we will have a balanced group of the following profiles:

  • Professionals in the youth field.
  • Young people ( preferably between 18 and 30 years interested in the field of culture and/or museums.
  • Museum professionals.

Participants should:

  • be at least 18 years old;
  • have sufficient language skills to be able to communicate in English;
  • have a willingness to take back the knowledge acquired and to implement the know-how and newly obtained skills in their local communities;
  • be able to participate in the entire seminar (for those selected to take part in the residential part).
